Darugaries - Boku no Kioku

about

Takashi Kumagai is a big reason a lot of this even happened; the whole idea of making music in unorthodox places came from him and his "Fairy Fort" gigs in the summer of 2010. They ended with Takashi's leaving Galway in August (a couple of weeks before I was shown the car park), but at every gig I've put on since that has not been a "regular" venue I've made sure to have a pineapple present in honour of the first Fairy Fort gig, where Takashi dotted supermarket-bought fruit around the urban wooded "venue".
Takashi returned to Galway in May of last year with his band Darugaries, an incredibly accomplished group of folky/jazzy improvisors who all took to recording in the car park like it was nothing at all. This song was my favourite to come out of those recordings; it's incredibly catchy and the torombone, clarinet and trumpets weave and dodge around the pillars and each other in perfect unison, even though the torombonist Mihara had only ever played with these guys twice before. The too-short tour they did was beautiful.
